Angular collapse of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

چکیده
We explore the structure and dynamics of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates DBECs near their threshold for instability. Near this threshold a DBEC may exhibit nontrivial biconcave density distributions, which are associated with instability against collapse into “angular roton” modes. Here we discuss experimental signatures of these features. In the first, we infer local collapse of the DBEC from the experimental stability diagram. In the second, we explore the dynamics of collapse and find that a nontrivial angular distribution is a signature of the DBEC possessing a biconcave structure.

Stability and Collapse Dynamics of Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensates in One-Dimensional Optical Lattices
The subject of this thesis is the investigation of the stability and the collapse dynamics of a dipolar 52Cr Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice potential. In this work, it is experimentally shown that the stability of the dipolar BEC is strongly modified when increasing the modulation depth of the sinusoidal potential landscape: a cross-over from dipolar de...
متن کاملVariational calculations on multilayer stacks of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates
We investigate a multilayer stack of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in terms of a simple Gaussian variational ansatz and demonstrate that this arrangement is characterized by the existence of several stationary states. Using a Hamiltonian picture we show that in an excited stack there is a coupled motion of the individual condensates by which they exchange energy. We find that for high excit...
متن کاملRadial and angular rotons in trapped dipolar gases.
We study Bose-Einstein condensates with purely dipolar interactions in oblate traps. We find that the condensate always becomes unstable to collapse when the number of particles is sufficiently large. We analyze the instability, and find that it is the trapped-gas analogue of the "roton-maxon" instability previously reported for a gas that is unconfined in 2D. In addition, we find that under ce...
متن کاملEffective field theory for spinor dipolar Bose Einstein condensates
We show that the effective theory of long wavelength low energy behavior of a dipolar BoseEinstein condensate(BEC) with large dipole moments (treated as a classical spin) can be modeled using an extended Non-linear sigma model (NLSM) like energy functional with an additional non-local term that represents long ranged anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction. Minimizing this effective energy functi...
متن کاملScattering length instability in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates.
We predict a new kind of instability in a Bose-Einstein condensate composed of dipolar particles. Namely, a comparatively weak dipole moment can produce a large, negative two-body scattering length that can collapse the Bose-Einstein condensate. To verify this effect, we validate mean-field solutions to this problem using exact, diffusion Monte Carlo methods. We show that the diffusion Monte Ca...
